A lot of people know about the 2007 espionage involving Ferrari and McLaren. It involved spies, sabotaged fuel, stolen blueprints and the biggest fine in sports history. But off to the side another strange story was happening between McLaren and Renault.

Renault got their hands on the designs of a unique suspension component from McLaren. Supposedly, Renault's engineering team couldn't figure out the purpose of the device from the drawing they had "acquired."

So what is this device? Broadly, it's known as a mechanical inerter, but in the F1 world everyone still uses the codename originally given to it by McLaren, the J-Damper.

For the inerter can’t you put some fins on the flywheel put the flywheel in liquid and make the flywheel fight the liquid saving a little bit of weight. There is an issue of going so fast the fins can rip off but I think that’s only if make the fins thin. You make a right triangle and the flat face is in contact of the liquid and the longer side is supporting the forces.

Jer... Just an FYI. Your animation at 0:17 to 0:35 is missing 2 zeroes on the sign. The sign shows $1,000,000 ($1 Million), it should be $100,000,000 ($100 Million). I don't think you'll redo the video to fix that...

Can't they add electric motors or magnet and coils in place of the flywheel or in combination to store energy in the form of Lorentz Force!? This way they can capture the energy and feed it in a electric system and vice versa. They wouldn't need a lot of mass because of the nature of the Lorentz force.

why not make a small inerter in a shock absorber liquid. the best of both worlds. you can have a threaded rod with a spinner and the liquid in shock absorbers. the inerter could work for small compression with the residence of liquid. the pig picked the energy would be dissipated completely in a shorter time. that would be great for commercial cars unless the inerter breaks frequently.

Why didn’t they make a fluid-filled j-damper? The rotation of the flywheel should be slowed down by adding a fluid. You keep the same diameter, same weight flywheel, but add a fluid with a low viscosity to the j-damper and kaboom.
Sushev Dhaka
Sushev Dhaka Prieš 20 dienų
@Mike Williams That does make sense yeah I think they must have thought about it What I can comprehend is that maybe air is a better fluid than any other one just because it makes the transfer of energy from kinetic to rotational and then roatational to kinetic easier than any other higher density fluid
Mike Williams
Mike Williams Prieš 20 dienų
@Sushev Dhaka yeah the modified flywheel thing i understand 100% but i was assiming that adding fluid to the smaller one would be better weight-wise than making the whole thing bigger.
Sushev Dhaka
Sushev Dhaka Prieš 20 dienų
The flywheel would have to have slits or something so that it at least interacts with the fluid properly. If it's as smooth as the one in the video, the fluid would have a minimal amount of effect. Also, f1 does not like weight bruh and fluid means more weight

Hopefully this brings me back into F1. It's not that interesting to me because of how much money gets thrown around by the big dogs because they're so OP. Leveling the playing field will make this much more exciting imo. Now if Nascar would just do the opposite so it can get interesting again...

Malcolm C. Smith of Cambridge University was probably not the first to invent it. Much earlier - in the nineties of the 20th century - the Polish inventor Lucjan Łągiewka presented his invention called the "Łągiewka bumper". Łągiewka tried to patent his invention, but encountered formal problems. A few or a dozen years after the Łągiewka presentations of his invention, Smith patented his - identical - invention under a different name. There were court disputes between Łągiewka and Cambridge and Smith, but the lack of support from the Polish government against the budget and support from Cambridge, its government and F1 recipients meant that the patent probably failed to cancel. Although there is evidence in the form of videos of the presentation of this invention. Today Lucjan Łągiewka is dead. Earlier, his son helped him in the fight for a patent, but I don't know how it ended. So ... probably the money won again.

Wondering how much energy is dissipated by a J damper... and whether you could make an effective electric J damper for an electric car that had an alternator rotor for the flywheel which converted the rotation into electrical energy (or instead of a J damper used a linear alternator..) and fed that into the car's power system instead of wasting it as heat.

well I am I sure I fail to fully understand the subject, But why the F not use double spring in this case. One spring is compressing, other is stretching, same thing, just opposite. Maybe because it is much more complex to produce J-thingy, than to just make two springs, one stretching, other compressing.
